BOARDWALK CONTROVERSY

Visitors can't aim for Obama - for now

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ - After a maelstrom of media attention last week, operators of a suddenly controversial boardwalk game have removed a mannequin depicting President Barack Obama.

The plastic likeness of Obama was among others of well-known people in the Walkin' Charlie game at Lucky Leo's arcade. Players throw baseballs at the plates held by the mannequins, which are on a rotating platform.

Obama has been replaced by effigies of former President George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton.

Although some people were offended by use of Obama as a target, other visitors to the boardwalk simply saw it as a game....

Walkin' Charlie is just like any other game in Seaside Heights, meant for entertainment purposes, Kabana said. Arcade manager Tom Whalen says the removal of the Obama mannequin was to show that the Walkin' Charlie game isn't anti-Democrat or anti-Republican.

A plastic bag was placed over the Obama character's head on Aug 11 after critics said it was disrespectful to us the president's likeness.

Whalen said he told a Secret Service agent who visited the business that employees did not urge players to throw at the Obama image. Whalen said the Obama figure might return in a few weeks.
